How to Avoid Problems While Link-Building

bad-link-building
The problems that most people have with link building are self-inflicted. Sometimes it comes through lazy link building, such as using spam bots. Other times it comes through misplaced trust, such as when you hire a devious black-hat SEO company. Other times it is a simple ignorance or lack of understanding over link building concepts that causes the problem. For example, the term “click here” is still a popular link anchor text (which is not a bad thing), but some people see metric data for “click here” and assume that it is attracting clicks. They will therefore label their anchor text as “click here” and even insert keywords into text relating to the words “click here.”

Do not spam manually

Spamming comments and associated links may seem like a good and productive way of increasing your links but there are a number of reasons why it is a bad idea. If you happen to come across a comment section owned by an SEO expert with a lot of time on his/her hands then a revenge campaign is inevitable (and quite fun from his/her perspective).

Link spamming will damage your online reputation and will often get you blocked from certain networks. If you use the same anchor text over multiple domains then your SEO will become damaged. It often results in your links being deleted, which will give you a high broken link rate--which again will damage your websites SEO.

Do not spam with robots

Not only do all of the statements made above about manual spamming apply, but also, so many plugins for comment sections protect against robots, that you are only liable to penetrate no-follow comment sections. No-follow comment sections are not going to do you any favors--link building wise.

Ask to swap links

Reciprocal links require a lot of time to set up, and you do need to convince the other party to link to you. There is also a maintenance issue, since you do not want to hold links for someone whom has deleted yours. Nevertheless, may link building problems can be solved through link swapping with people who take good care of their websites/blogs.

Do not buy links

Buying links is one of the biggest trouble causers after link spamming. When you buy links you have no guarantee of results, nor do you have a guarantee that they will last longer than a week. You have no guarantee that they will come from related content, or that they are not part of a link farm that will end up having you punished by Google. There are so many down sides to link buying that it is best to avoid it unless you know exactly what you are buying, what you are doing, and whom you are dealing with.

Do not trust SEO companies to do your links for you

For similar reasons to the “Don’t buy links” paragraph above, you do not know how they are going to manage your backlinks. Ideally, you want them to create links from domains that rank highly, with targeted anchor text embedded within related content. But how are you going to guarantee that all of those things happen unless you are the one doing it yourself. Do not be put off buying from SEO building companies if you know what you are doing and what you are buying, but never enter into an agreement based upon trust alone.

Avoid link farms at all costs

Only fools fall for farms. Of all the updates, it seems that the one to remove link farms has eventually worked. It seems to have taken a long time for the update to finally purge Google of this nasty little plagiarism factory but they seem to have done it. Link farms often have their links de-indexed from Google within two months. If you are thinking of buying a few links from a link farm then you may join that farm in Google oblivion (suspension or a ban from Google’s search engine results).

Learn about anchor text

If you learn how to use anchor in the most productive way then you will not come a cropper through its misuse. Google and Bing do have tutorials and FAQs relating to anchor text. Plus the rules have not changed in a few years, so even if you buy a reputable SEO book you will find the answers you need.

Buy from link directories

There are some link directories that are legitimate. You are allowed to purchase entry into their index and they will advertise your website on their advert. The adverts have a link back to your website Google accepts as a strong link (if the directory is a legitimate one).
